Bringing spell check functionality to Internet Explorer

The Internet Explorer team at Microsoft has recently released their latest version of the browser. Oddly, after even 9 versions, IE still is unable to handle it’s own spell checking natively. While every other major browser of any significance has long since offered such a feature, IE remains lagging. Frankly the omission of such a common feature of their competitors leaves many a bit perplexed. Nevertheless, a market for third-party solutions consequently exists.

Speckie is an Internet Explorer add-on compatible with all recent versions of the browser, including the latest release 9.0, that provides the spell check functionality just as you’ve come to expect in your browser. Installation and configuration is straightforward and smooth. Following the download and execution of the program, launch Internet Explorer and confirm the registration of the new add-on.

Speckie can be configure through the address bar location about:speckie – which is a bit different than what you may be expecting, especially under the IE browser. You can expect the logical myriad of options being available; Speckie even supports custom dictionaries that can be populated over time based on your use. Once you’ve configured Speckie – and actually the defaults likely suffice for most – restart your IE session to finish the spell check add-on integration.

Returning to IE, you can now see the familiar red squiggly under any identified misspelled word. The conditioned behavior is as you’d expect – right-click on the word and select from a few corrected suggestions as provided by Speckie.

One thing of note, it’s recommended to just download the program from one of the mirror sites listed on the developers website. Downloading from the developer’s site directly requires an annoying registration process first. Using a mirror like Softpedia gets around this roadblock safely.
